Most often the vivid squid chain is trolled as a teaser with some type of trailing lure, flap or dead bait (Spanish Mackerel.) However you could put a rigged bait behind this chain of your choosing and fish from a rod as opposed to a teaser reel. We do have people who rig the individual Vivid squids with an egg sinker and cable hookset to troll individually as a lure or green stick bait.

Offshore vs inshore is simply terminology | slang used to define the type of species you are targeting when fishing. Offshore is associated with species such as Tuna, Dolphin, Wahoo, Marlin and various species of open ocean feeders. While inshore is referring to fish that live and feed within close proximity to land, Trout, Flounder, Drum, Snook, etc. There is no exact distance, as that varies from one location to the next. Example: in FL you may be catching Mahi within 5 miles, where as in NC you may be 25-50 miles offshore.

Specifically speaking to the hook placement in the skirt. IGFA rule states that the skirt must cover the eye of the hook. In their words: "The trailing hook may not extend more than a hook's length beyond the skirt of the lure." To this point, all of our resin head trolling lures are rigged to meet this spec.

For redfish you want to have your boat off bank, and depending on the depth of water will determine your length between the cork and bait.You want some slack on the line, and when it hits the water pop your rod twice. Sometimes we'll let it sit a few seconds before popping again.
You'll repeat this a few times before casting again or changing your length / slack. If you don't get a good "clunk" then you want more slack.

the 7/0 shank is 1.75 inches, the 8/0 and 9/0 shanks are 2 inches. The difference between the 8/0 and 9/0 shanks are the throat of the hook -- the 9/0 has a bigger throat, with more clearance between tip and shank. See the picture below that I just took for comparison between the three ballyhoo hooks

While the rigging pad may work for this application, it's primarily designed for temporary protection of high end finishes. The material is very similar to a mouse pad in thickness and construction; however the rigging pad has a tighter weave and more of a satin finish for easy cleaning. See below image.
