For the 12 x 12 Squid dredge we recommend a 4lb coated dredge fish weight. You can go lighter and pull 24-48oz trolling bars, but it depends on the speed of your troll.
The slower your are going, the less weight needed to keep the dredge below the surface. If your pulling the dredge at lure speeds of 7-9knts, a 4lb fish weight will work perfectly.
We use a heavy paracord / rope hand line connected to 10' of 400lbs leader and snap swivel for the mainline. The rope / paracord is substantially safer and easier to pull in when wet; its also much easier to cleat off than mono.
Color is mostly personal preference. We use a lot of Green and Black in our dredges, as well as Blue and Pink.
